Thomas Howard

Tom Howard is a NCRL PhD student in the Department of Earth, Environmental, and Planetary Sciences (DEEPS) at Brown University. Tom is interested in studying how humans are impacting the global water environment, and how it, in turn, is impacting us. His research focuses on using remote sensing techniques to understand the natural and anthropogenic drivers behind shifts in global water quality, quantity, and distribution, as well as the spatiotemporal variability of these changes. Currently, Tom is using remote sensing and other techniques to study carbon fluxes in arctic and boreal environments.

Prior to starting his PhD, Tom received his bachelor’s degree in environmental engineering from Johns Hopkins University and worked in the water resources practice group at Hazen and Sawyer. In 2023, Tom founded Resolve Hydro LLC, an aquatic remote sensing company specializing in the use of satellite imagery for mapping aquatic vegetation, monitoring water quality, and analyzing watershed influences on waterbodies.
